Apple tartlets

We made these easy apple tartlets with a simple apple filling and tasty squares dough, using a silicon tartelette container.

It was a bit of an experiment, but they came out beautifully, exactly like the apple tartlets we grew up with as children.

Makes six tartlets, each about 85 mm in diameter

Ingredients

  • 1 quantity of tasty square dough
  • 4 to 6 apples
  • or a 410 tin of apple slices
  • 1 cinnamon quill
  • Sugar to taste

Method

  1. Preheated your oven to 180°C.
  2. Peel the apples, remove their cores and then slice and chop them.
  3. Simmer the apple and cinnamon quill in a little water until the apple is soft. Use just enough water to keep the apple moist.
  4. Remove the cinnamon quill and sweeten to your own taste. (We prefer it to be neither too sweet or too tangy.)
  5. Make the dough according to the tasty squares recipe.
  6. Divide the dough into three equal parts.
  7. Refrigerate one third of the dough and divide the remaining two thirds into six portions and use it to make a crust in each of the silicon tartlet containers. Make sure that the crust covers the walls of each container.
  8. Add any leftover dough to the remaining dough in the refrigerator.
  9. Fill the crusts with the cooked apple.
  10. Use a normal grater to grate the refrigerated dough over the apple fillings.
  11. Bake for about 20 minutes at 180°C, until pale brown.

Notes

Serve, preferably warm out of the oven, with whipped cream.
